Session Description:
A hospital is a workplace. Too often, we design healthcare environments with a primary focus on patients and visitors, but a hospital can’t function without its staff. Nurses, doctors and support teams spend long hours in high-stress environments, and their well-being directly impacts patient care. Providers across our state continue to experience workforce shortages.
So how do we create a workplace that supports them? One of the biggest concerns is acoustics. Studies show that excessive noise in healthcare settings contributes to stress, burnout and even medical errors. One simple yet effective strategy is to provide quiet spaces and opportunities for respite, where staff can step away from the constant hum of machines, alarms and chatter.
Emily Dunn, director of workplace strategy at EUA and member of the WELL Sound Concept Advisory, will share insights on how and why acoustics impact our healthcare employees and why we need to focus on supporting their well-being as well as the patients’. Drawing on research and data, she will highlight the value of addressing staff acoustical needs—not only to support wellness but also to strengthen recruitment and retention efforts and overall performance.
