Thank You from Second Harvest Foodbank

Dear American College of Healthcare Executives – Wisconsin Chapter,

On behalf of the many local families who need nutritious food, thank you for coordinating a volunteer group on Thursday, November 1, 2018. Your group volunteered for a total of 38.75 hours and the value of this time equates to 2,681 meals. Your group’s service will help Second Harvest Foodbank provide more food to our neighbors struggling with hunger.

Did you know that within our 16-county service area nearly 44,000 children are food insecure and don’t always know where their next meal will come from? Studies show that poorly nourished children can’t concentrate and don’t perform as well in school, have lower graduation rates, and require far more long-term health care spending.

Second Harvest addresses childhood hunger though initiatives like food distribution and FoodShare outreach, and through programs and partnerships like Kids Cafes and School Pantries. Kids Cafes provide afterschool snacks, meals and nutrition education to at-risk children through neighborhood centers. School Pantries provide groceries at no cost to students and their families in a familiar and comfortable school setting. Thanks to your generous support, we’re working to improve access to nutritious food for children facing hunger.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of those we serve. Together, we can end hunger in southwestern Wisconsin.

Sincerely,

Daniel J. Stein

President/CEO

P.S. There are many ways for your business and employees to stay involved with the Foodbank:

  • Give Funds: Consider a program or event sponsorship, such as NBC15 Share Your Holidays to eliminate hunger.  Sponsorships provide tremendous marketing exposure throughout 16 southwestern Wisconsin counties and are tax-deductible.
  • Give Food & Funds: Host a food/fund drive or event. Guidelines, food collection barrels and cash collection jars are available.
  • Give Voice: Be a fan or follower of Second Harvest on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Chapter Board and LDP Volunteer at Second Harvest

Most of us know what it feels like to be hungry. Your stomach growls a little bit and you head to the refrigerator to get a little something to hold you over until your next meal.

For about 1 in 9 of us in southwestern Wisconsin that next meal isn’t always there. That means 8 in 9 of us probably don’t know what it’s like to have to water down our food just to make it stretch another day. Or to have to put a crumpled up piece of paper in our son’s brown paper lunch bag so it looks like he has something to eat and he’s not so embarrassed at school. That’s real hunger!

Since 1986 Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin has put more than 100 million meals on the tables of the 1 in 8 who are facing hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. They work together with hundreds of local hunger-relief charities to provide the peace-of-mind people get when they know they have enough food. They are also a member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of member food banks and the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.

Despite the millions of meals they’ve been able to provide as a result of our generous donors over the years, there is still a gap between the number of meals we provide and the number of meals needed.

That’s where the ACHE-Wisconsin Chapter Board and LDP co-hort made a difference by giving their time! On November 1, the group spent the afternoon at Second Harvest, sorting and packaging sweet potatoes and apples. They left Second Harvest knowing that together, we can end hunger!
