American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Wisconsin Chapter Leadership Development Program (LDP) Cohort X was hosted at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison and Stoughton Hospital to wrap up the 2019 calendar year Site Visits.

Joyce Zweifel, FACHE, Manager-Business Development welcomed the group to St. Mary’s Hospital – Madison on October 25^th and provided an introduction to SSM Health over breakfast.  Jonathan Lewis, FACHE, VP Operations, St. Mary’s Hospital then took the group on an excellent tour of St. Mary’s Madison which included the helipad for a great photo op.

Jonathan Rozenfeld, President, St. Mary’s Hospital then joined the group for an overview of Hospital Operations, followed by an engaging session on Clinic Operations with Mark Thompson, M.D., President, Medical Groups-Wisconsin Region and Mark Kadlec, VP Operations, Physician and Ambulatory Services.

Veronica Scott-Fulton, DNP, MPH, RN, NEA-BC, Regional Vice President Nursing WI joined the group for a lively discussion on Servant Leadership to Drive Results, followed by an interactive Question and Answer Session on Health System Operations, Leadership and Career Development with Kerry Swanson, Regional COO Wisconsin, Jonathan Rozenfeld, President, St. Mary’s Hospital and Mark Thompson, M.D., President, Medical Groups-Wisconsin Region.

The cohort then traveled to Stoughton Hospital for the afternoon, and enjoyed lunch during introductions and discussion with the Administrative Team about their Career Paths.

Dan DeGroot, CEO shared his inspiring career journey, and Teresa Lindfors, FACHE, VP of Growth and Development shared a great overview of Culture and making of Excellence Together.  Cohort members were interested to learn more about What it’s like to be a Critical Access Hospital from Dan DeGroot, CEO and Michelle Abey, CFO.  The day wrapped up with a comprehensive tour of Stoughton Hospital with Teresa Lindfors, FACHE.

The SSM Health site visit was coordinated by cohort member Derek Angle, Manager, Medical Imaging Operations, SSM Health Dean Medical Group.  The Stoughton Hospital site visit was coordinated by cohort member Betsy Folbrecht, Specialty Physician Clinic Manager who also hosted student mentee Lexa Van Fleet from Future Healthcare Executives (FHE) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Overall, the day provided excellent insights into both organizations and open dialogue with senior leaders.  Key takeaways included: Aim to be a servant leader and put the team first; conceptualize and see the big picture; optimize your resume to tell your story and quantify your differentiators.

ACHE-WI 2019-2020 Leadership Development Program (LDP) cohort X had the opportunity to spend quality time with senior leaders from Advocate Aurora Health and Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin on August 23^rd, during a full day site visit split between 2 locations.

LDP co-host Nick Ladell shared an overview of the organizational background and integration of Advocate Aurora Health during an informative breakfast gathering, followed by a tour of the Aurora Women’s Pavilion and Aurora West Allis Medical Center campus and a group discussion about Resiliency and Well-Being.

Steve Francaviglia/Regional President and Frank LaVora, MD/Regional Chief Medical Officer at Advocate Aurora Health enlightened the early careerists with words of wisdom and important lessons about effective leadership, communication challenges and strategies, delegating, living well, and defining a legacy through relationship building and mentorship. Thought-provoking conversations with executive leaders at the system level inspired personal reflection and specific calls to action.

The cohort then traveled to Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin in Glendale, and was personally welcomed with an elegant dining experience and opportunity to meet with senior leaders Brian Cramer/CEO, Brandon Goldbeck/Director of Clinical Support, Kim Spiess/CFO and Nanette Johnson/CNO.

An in-depth CEO-led hospital tour provided insights into shaping organizational culture and recognized critical success factors focused on Quality, Patient Satisfaction and Staff Satisfaction. While rounding the front line staff were meaningfully engaged, and the cohort had an opportunity to meet Rory Wright, MD/orthopedic surgeon and co-founder of the uniquely physician-owned and physician-led hospital. High impact time with Brian Cramer throughout the afternoon became an impromptu master class in leadership, including modeling crucial conversations and best practices in action with an inspiring commitment to developing others.

Key takeaways learned and observed during the 2 site visits include: be visible as a leader; be genuine and show humility; round with purpose; treat patients and staff like family; invest in staff at all levels to achieve their greatest potential, with the support of mentorship and sponsorship; be bold and take on new challenges; be creative and be collaborative; recognize and reward front line staff who deliver exceptional care to achieve the top nationally recognized outcomes; take time to personally re-charge.

The site visits were co-hosted by Nick Ladell/Director, Pharmacy Services at Aurora West Allis Medical Center/Advocate Aurora Health and Will McMullen/Financial Analyst, Orthopaedic Hospital of Wisconsin. Students mentored by each co-host through the ACHE-WI Leadership Development Program greatly appreciated the invitation to join the cohort for part of the day, including Madeline Wundrock and Rachel Schneider from Future Healthcare Executives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The American College of Healthcare Executives-Wisconsin Chapter strives to assemble a board that encompasses a diverse representation of leaders throughout the state who are committed to the advancement of healthcare leadership and fulfilling the chapter’s mission. The mission of the Chapter is to be the professional membership society for healthcare executives; to meet its members’ professional, educational, and leadership needs; to promote high ethical standards and conduct; to advance healthcare leadership and management excellence; and to promote the mission of ACHE.

To be eligible to serve on the Board, an individual must be a member of the Wisconsin Chapter and have completed one year of membership in ACHE. Download the position description for more information and expectations. Board members should expect to commit 40-60 hours per year for board activities, which include:

• In-person attendance at quarterly Board meetings, typically lasting 3-4 hours and held in Madison or Milwaukee
• Chair, co-chair or actively serve on one committee
• Participation on the Regent Advisory Council (RAC), providing guidance and support in the advancement of the Regent’s goals for our Chapter
