Leadership Development Program (LDP) Site Visit in Green Bay at Aurora BayCare Medical Center and Humana

ACHE Leadership Development Program (LDP) cohort IX spent the day in Green Bay on October 12th for a site visit at Aurora BayCare Medical Center and Humana.

The day started with a tour of the Aurora Baycare Neuroscience Center to view the patient self-rooming/patient-tracking system at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center before breakfast.

Jeff Bard, Executive Vice President, North Region and Regional Patient Service Area President, led an engaging session on transformation of care and reimagining health while providing an overview of organizational structure highlighting the Advocate Aurora Health merger. Market CMO Tim Lineberry, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Aurora Health Care Medical Group then shared insights on the physician model and spectrum of physician leadership with a market approach. Sandy Ewald, Patient Service Area President, Greater Green Bay and Marinette, met with the group next to share expertise navigating through complex leadership environments with an emphasis on joint venture partnerships.  A leadership panel discussion followed with Sandy Ewald joined by Dean Maniscalco, Senior Director Administrator, Greater Green Bay; Todd Noggle, Director of Clinical Operations; Melanie Tiedt, Senior Director Administrator, Marinette; and Amy Jerdee, Vice President of Operations, Aurora BayCare Medical Center.  Melanie Tiedt continued with the group over lunch, to discuss rural healthcare and complexities related to recruitment.

The cohort then traveled to Humana to spend the afternoon with leaders focused on insurance and related industry trends. Mark Matzke, Senior Vice President, Employer Group and Specialty provided an overview of Humana and Kristina Johnson, Product Design/Development Lead shared trends and how they design products. Mark Wernicke, Vice President, Provider Development discussed healthcare partnerships and introduced care decision insights with tools and resources for physicians and members through meaningful analytics. Cheri Greenfield, Vice President, Clinical Care Services introduced home care operations focused on Medicare, and Mike Hartjes, Vice President, Actuarial and Analytic Services  shared changes in the insurance environment focused on the employer group.  The day wrapped up with an open discussion related to consumer satisfaction and transparency and the role of analytics in our organizations.

The day was hosted by LDP cohort member Rachel Cabelka, Manager, Clinic Operations, Aurora Health Care.  Mentee Kaosheng April Thao from Future Healthcare Executives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee joined the group for the full day professional development experience.

Leadership Development Program (LDP) Site Visit at the Milwaukee VA, with Integrated Medical Partners

ACHE Leadership Development Program (LDP) cohort IX spent a day at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center in August, for a site visit in collaboration with Integrated Medical Partners.

Bill Pickart, Chief Executive Officer at Integrated Medical Partners (IMP) joined the group for breakfast and then shared leadership insights and wisdom from his C-suite experience as CEO.  This was followed by an analytics demonstration by cohort member and co-host Tracy Keenan, Analytics Manager, Integrated Medical Partners.

A campus historical tour at the Zablocki VA Medical Center followed, including Milwaukee’s former historic Soldiers Home and other buildings on the grounds that will begin redevelopment in early 2019.

A working lunch covered “VA 101” with cohort member and host Brian Michalski, Health System Specialist, Milwaukee VA Medical Center.  This included an engaging discussion of views from Washington.

James D. McLain, FACHE, Deputy Director (COO) and then-Acting Medical Center Director (CEO) at the Zablocki VA Medical Center joined the group for lunch along with Christina Orr, DPT, Assistant Medical Center Director, and shared their own inspiring leadership journeys as well as leading an interactive discussion on various leadership topics.

Michael D. Erdmann, MD, MS, Chief of Staff and Associate Dean for the VA, shared insights on the Department of Veterans Affairs: Past, Present and Future.  Then before wrapping up the day as a cohort, Beth Ann Smith, Program Manager – Benefits Management, provided an overview of VA benefits, billing and insurance as well as the procurement system and related topics.

In addition to our Leadership Development Program (LDP) cohort members participating in the site visit, students mentored by our co-hosts joined the group to include Shelby Edl, Vice President and Claudette Ingold, Professional Development Chair, Future Healthcare Executives (FHE) at UW-Milwaukee.
