Grant for Chapter Innovation Awarded to Nine Chapters including Wisconsin

ACHE recently awarded chapter innovation grants to nine chapters. The grant program fosters chapter innovation in the development and delivery of new programs, products and services or new methods of delivery that add value for ACHE members. In conjunction with ACHE’s 2019-2021 strategy, we asked chapters to focus on engaging our highest priority near-term audiences: early careerists and clinicians. Chapters could apply for two grant types: Chapter-Led (projects that are solely created and executed by the chapter) and ACHE-Chapter Collaborative (chapters will receive resources and guidance from ACHE to help them complete their projects).

The following chapters were award recipients:

Chapter-Led Innovation Grants

ACHE of Massachusetts

The grant will fund new podcasts that are specifically applicable to early careerists and clinicians, allowing a more convenient way to engage with the chapter.

American College of Healthcare Executives—Wisconsin Chapter

This grant will fund the development of a virtual Career Development Academy for early careerists. The academy will include quarterly webinars and an online community, while leveraging ACHE resources, such as ACHE CareerEDGE®

Chicago Health Executives Forum

The chapter will target clinicians through establishment of MEDU, a physician skills enhancement program. The 10 core knowledge areas of the Board of Governors Exam will be the basis of the education offerings for the cohort learning experience.

East Tennessee Healthcare Executives Affiliation

This project will use a multi-pronged approach to increase and sustain membership among early careerists. The approaches include a mentor program; a social media, marketing and outreach campaign; and knowledge development in the areas of Baldrige and Lean/Six Sigma.

Greater Charlotte Healthcare Executives

The chapter seeks to engage both their early careerist and clinician members through a variety of tactics including webinars, quarterly emails and a one-day summit.

Washington State Healthcare Executive Forum

This is an event-based approach targeted to early careerists. Several networking events and a breakfast will serve as venues to serve a cohort of early careerists, who will also participate in emotional intelligence assessments through ACHE’s Career Resource Center and potentially in conjunction with the Seattle Cluster.

ACHE-Chapter Collaborative Grants

California Association of Healthcare Leaders

ACHE will work with the chapter to develop the appropriate technology to support a video resource library and enhance live streaming technology that can help engage early careerists and clinicians. The collaboration will focus on making sure the chapter understands the needs of early careerists and clinicians, and then meets those needs as they develop their video and event content. Acquisition of marketing and production expertise may also be necessary. Through the collaboration, there will also be a focus on adhering to all ACHE Face-to-Face and Qualified Education credits policies and procedures so any learnings can be appropriately applied to other chapters. 

ACHE of Northern Ohio

This grant targets clinicians through a program called Boardroom to Bedside. This empathy card-writing and distribution event strives to increase awareness of ACHE within the clinical professions with a goal of engaging them locally and nationally. The collaboration component will focus on messaging, branding and marketing to ensure that the empathy cards achieve that goal.

South Texas Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives

The chapter will develop an early careerist workshop focused on skill and resume development, leveraging of social media and an interviewing workshop series. This includes collaboration with ACHE’s Career Resource Center to engage the chapter on how best to support early careerists in these areas.

What’s next for Medicaid?

Major changes are looming for Wisconsin’s Medicaid program. Governor Tony Evers and Democrats are preparing a push to expand the program, a move long opposed by Republicans. Meanwhile, the Department of Health Services is working on the roll out of premiums and work requirements for BadgerCare recipients.

Leadership Development Program (LDP) Site Visits at Fort HealthCare and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Janesville

The American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Wisconsin Chapter Leadership Development Program (LDP) capped off its 9th cohort year with Site Visits at Fort Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson and SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Janesville on February 8, 2019.

The day began with a Introduction to Fort HealthCare, by co-host and cohort member Carl Selvick, Senior Director Clinic Operations.  This was followed by an overview of Quality initiatives, with Connie Gilkey, Director-Quality and Integrated Care; and Marie Wiesmann, Vice President-Nursing Services/Chief Nursing Officer.  Chris Barron, Executive Director of Executive Population Health and Clinical Services then shared an overview of approaches to Population Health.

Michael Wallace, FACHE, President and CEO of Fort HealthCare led a discussion on successful Leadership strategies, and joined the group in meaningful conversation over lunch.

The group then traveled to continue the day with leaders from SSM Health at St. Mary’s Hospital in Janesville, co-hosted by cohort member Aaron Budd.

Augustine Duru, SSM Health-WI Regional Director of Mission Integration kicked off the afternoon with a warm Welcome and History of SSM Health.

Damond Boatwright, FACHE, SSM Health-WI Regional President of Operations, engaged the group in inspiring and thoughtful reflection while providing an Overview of SSM Health WI.

A Panel Discussion on Matrixed Organizations followed, with interactive conversations led by Ben Layman, President at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Janesville; David Docherty, Vice President/Chief Growth Officer at SSM Health Dean Health Plan; Kayla Murphy, HR Leader at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Janesville; and Rhonda Kosharek, Clinical Manager at SSM Health Dean Medical Group.

The group then headed to Sidelines, Janesville for a networking social to wrap up the cohort year along with mentees from the Future Healthcare Executives student group at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

WHA’s Jennifer Frank Honored for Her Leadership and Service by AHA and Hospital Associations

WHA Vice President of Education and Marketing Jennifer Frank was recently awarded the A2E Health Care Leadership and Service Award. This award recognizes an individual who has devoted their professional time and effort to strengthening the goals and objectives of A2E and its respective members through dedicated service and outstanding leadership.“Health care is a dynamic and changing industry, and it is critical that our educational programming and partnerships remain relevant and impactful in order to deliver value for our members. In leading WHA’s Education Department, Jennifer demonstrates so many of the attributes that are recognized and celebrated by the A2E Health Care Leadership and Service Award,” said Eric Borgerding, WHA President and CEO. “Jennifer is a valued and respected colleague, who works closely with her teammates at WHA, our members, and our partner organizations to deliver impactful and relevant educational programming that results in better care for Wisconsin patients and their families.”

Among the many examples of Frank’s excellent work and commitment is WHA’s annual Advocacy Day, which brings more than 1,000 hospital advocates to Madison for education and citizen lobbying. Frank also provides exemplary support and service to WHA and its members, including many of WHA’s key allied and partner organizations, such as the Partners of WHA and the Wisconsin Organization of Nurse Leaders, among others. Jennifer also serves as the lead staff to the WHA Foundation.

Improving Population Health by Reducing Food Insecurity

Children are at increased risk for food insecurity, malnutrition and obesity during the summer, when school is not in session and the National School Breakfast and Lunch programs are suspended. In Wisconsin, 1 in 5 kids struggle with hunger. Only 16% of kids who qualify for free/reduced price school lunch are also getting summer meals. The good news: Non-profit health care institutions pair perfectly with USDA’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), allowing hospitals in eligible areas to offer nutritious meals at no cost to children.

Participation in the SFSP within health care’s existing infrastructure provides an opportunity to improve population health by increasing access to nutritious meals for those most in need. Across the country, hospitals have implemented SFSP via a variety of models, all of which are financially sustainable, not disruptive to daily operations, and meet the needs of a high-risk population.

“At UW Health we’ve been able to partner with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction to offer free nutritious meals to over 2,000 children each summer.  The program is easy to implement and the sponsoring organization is reimbursed for the meals. It’s a low to no cost way for hospitals to give back to the community, while also ensuring children don’t go hungry over the summer when school is not in session.”

Seth R. Teigen, FACHE, Elected to American College of Healthcare Executives Council of Regents

CHICAGO —Seth R. Teigen, FACHE, President of Franklin and St. Francis Hospitals with Ascension Wisconsin has been appointed to the Council of Regents, the legislative body of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The Council of Regents serves as the vital link between ACHE and members by approving governance and membership regulations as well as promoting ACHE programs, services and activities within their respective areas.

Teigen will take office at the Council of Regents meeting March 2, 2019, during ACHE’s 62nd Congress on Healthcare Leadership at the Hilton Chicago. As a Regent, Healthcare will represent ACHE’s membership in Wisconsin.

Board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow, Teigen has served as President of Franklin and St. Francis Hospitals since April of 2017.  Prior to this position, he was recognized in 2016 as one of the 50 Rising Stars in Healthcare under 40 by Becker’s Hospital Review.  Additionally, he was named to the Madison In Business Magazine “40 under 40” list, and prior to that was recognized as the Young Healthcare Executive of the Year in Wisconsin (2012) by the American College of Healthcare Executives.

An active advocate for healthcare issues Teigen serves as the chair for the Public Policy Committee with the Wisconsin Hospital Association.  In addition, he had spent almost a decade on the board of directors for the American College of Healthcare Executives Wisconsin Chapter representing healthcare leaders from across the entire state.

February 12 Newsmaker Event: MCW CEO John Raymond

Medical College of Wisconsin CEO Dr. John Raymond wants to make Milwaukee one of the nation’s healthiest and safest cities. To do that, MCW is partnering with the Greater Milwaukee Foundation on an initiative aimed at addressing social determinants of health including workforce, housing and food insecurity.

It’s also continuing its focus on the state’s looming physician shortage and increasing access to behavioral health.

At a newsmaker event on February 12, Raymond will provide an update on the Flourishing Lives Initiative, discuss what’s next for MCW’s regional campuses and more.  The event will be held at the Wisconsin Club (900 West Wisconsin Avenue); lunch served at 11:45am, with the program to follow from 12:15pm to 1pm.
