Leadership Development Program (LDP) Site Visit at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, with Cumberland Healthcare

ACHE Leadership Development Program (LDP) cohort IX spent the day in Eau Claire on December 7th for a site visit at Mayo Clinic Health System, organized in collaboration with Cumberland Healthcare.  The group was hosted at Mayo Clinic Health System’s Luther Campus, and joined by leaders from Cumberland Healthcare.

Paul Horvath, MD, Chair – Urgent Care, Mayo Clinic Health System, Northwest Wisconsin, welcomed the cohort as a 2016 graduate of our ACHE Wisconsin Chapter Leadership Development Program and current chapter board member, and led the opening session on Organizational Integration and Physician LeadershipJerilyn Mulcahy, MBA, Director – Corporate Health Services and Cindy Ming, MS, LCSW, Operations Administrator – Primary Care, followed with a discussion on Innovations in the Healthcare Delivery System.  The group continued with a Tour of the Hospital, and then had the opportunity to meet with Michael A. Morrey, PhD, Regional Chair – Administration, Northwest Wisconsin and Southwest Wisconsin, for a focused Introduction to Mayo Clinic Health System including distinguishing leadership characteristics, as well as his own Leadership Path.

Jordan Dow, FACHE, PharmD, MS, Regional Director – Pharmacy, Mayo Clinic Health System, Northwest Wisconsin, wrapped up the morning as another 2016 graduate of the ACHE Wisconsin Chapter Leadership Development Program and current program committee member, and shared valuable insights that ranged from Drug Pricing to the process of earning and maintaining the distinguished FACHE Credential as a board certified healthcare executive.

Mike Gutsch, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer, Cumberland Healthcare, joined the group after lunch for an engaging discussion on Rural Healthcare, and shared unique insights and lessons learned from his own Leadership JourneyKeri Nelson, RN, Director of Nursing, Cumberland Healthcare, followed with a discussion on Nursing Leadership, and experience working with Labor Unions in the Healthcare Setting.

The day of learning concluded with a Panel of Vice Chairs – Administration, Mayo Clinic Health System, including Jason Craig, MBA, Vice Chair – Administration, Medical & Surgical Specialties; Zan Degen, RN, MBA, Vice Chair – Administration, Medical & Surgical Specialties; and Dean Eide, EdD, Vice Chair – Administration, Hospital Operations; with Insights and Perspectives for Successful Leadership in the Healthcare Setting.

Nicole Aloia, MHA, MA, Operations Administrator – Medical Oncology, Mayo Clinic Health System, and Benjamin (BJ) Brenna, PT, DPT, SCS, PES, Director of Business Development and Rehabilitation Services, Cumberland Healthcare, collaborated as co-hosts in planning the Site Visit as part of our ACHE-WI Leadership Development Program and student mentee Anna Johannes joined the group from Future Healthcare Executives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

ACHE’s Journal of Healthcare Management has launched a new podcast series on the JHM website and on iTunes. “A Leader Who Cares” is an audio version of the interview included in each issue of JHM and offers a convenient digital format for busy leaders.

Student Members Apply for an ACHE Graduate Student Scholarship

Applications for the 2019 Dent and McGaw scholarships are opening soon! Offered annually, the Albert W. Dent and Foster G. McGaw graduate student scholarships are awarded to outstanding students enrolled in graduate programs in health services administration to help finance their education. Each scholarship is worth $5,000. Every year, ACHE awards up to a total of 15 scholarships.

WHA offering free webinar series: Building Resilience for Health Care Professionals

Beginning in January, the Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) and the Wisconsin Medical Society are partnering to offer a free monthly webinar series, focused on building workplace resilience for busy and stressed health care professionals. The issue of burnout among health care professionals is real, common but treatable. The 2019 monthly sessions included in this series will address the issue with engaging and evidence-based content, delivered in bite-sized doses, and include practical tools, strategies and resources for building and maintaining a resilient workforce that will be immediately applicable for all members of the health care team, regardless of your role.

As a member of the Wisconsin Chapter of ACHE, WHA would like to personally invite you to register today to participate in this important series.

The series was developed and will be led by well-known health care workforce resilience expert Dr. Bryan Sexton, Director of the Duke Patient Safety Center at Duke University Health System. Each session is scalable for an audience of any size, and will also be recorded for participants to access on-demand. We recommend you consider gathering staff for the live session each month or using the recorded session as part of a regularly scheduled staff meeting throughout 2019. Each monthly session will feature a unique topic and is approved for both AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and Nurse CE credit., for those who participate in the live event or view the recording within 30 days.

Chapter Board and LDP Volunteer at Second Harvest

Most of us know what it feels like to be hungry. Your stomach growls a little bit and you head to the refrigerator to get a little something to hold you over until your next meal.

For about 1 in 9 of us in southwestern Wisconsin that next meal isn’t always there. That means 8 in 9 of us probably don’t know what it’s like to have to water down our food just to make it stretch another day. Or to have to put a crumpled up piece of paper in our son’s brown paper lunch bag so it looks like he has something to eat and he’s not so embarrassed at school. That’s real hunger!

Since 1986 Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin has put more than 100 million meals on the tables of the 1 in 8 who are facing hunger in southwestern Wisconsin. They work together with hundreds of local hunger-relief charities to provide the peace-of-mind people get when they know they have enough food. They are also a member of Feeding America, a nationwide network of member food banks and the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization.

Despite the millions of meals they’ve been able to provide as a result of our generous donors over the years, there is still a gap between the number of meals we provide and the number of meals needed.

That’s where the ACHE-Wisconsin Chapter Board and LDP co-hort made a difference by giving their time! On November 1, the group spent the afternoon at Second Harvest, sorting and packaging sweet potatoes and apples. They left Second Harvest knowing that together, we can end hunger!

Leadership Development Program (LDP) Site Visit in Green Bay at Aurora BayCare Medical Center and Humana

ACHE Leadership Development Program (LDP) cohort IX spent the day in Green Bay on October 12th for a site visit at Aurora BayCare Medical Center and Humana.

The day started with a tour of the Aurora Baycare Neuroscience Center to view the patient self-rooming/patient-tracking system at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center before breakfast.

Jeff Bard, Executive Vice President, North Region and Regional Patient Service Area President, led an engaging session on transformation of care and reimagining health while providing an overview of organizational structure highlighting the Advocate Aurora Health merger. Market CMO Tim Lineberry, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Aurora Health Care Medical Group then shared insights on the physician model and spectrum of physician leadership with a market approach. Sandy Ewald, Patient Service Area President, Greater Green Bay and Marinette, met with the group next to share expertise navigating through complex leadership environments with an emphasis on joint venture partnerships.  A leadership panel discussion followed with Sandy Ewald joined by Dean Maniscalco, Senior Director Administrator, Greater Green Bay; Todd Noggle, Director of Clinical Operations; Melanie Tiedt, Senior Director Administrator, Marinette; and Amy Jerdee, Vice President of Operations, Aurora BayCare Medical Center.  Melanie Tiedt continued with the group over lunch, to discuss rural healthcare and complexities related to recruitment.

The cohort then traveled to Humana to spend the afternoon with leaders focused on insurance and related industry trends. Mark Matzke, Senior Vice President, Employer Group and Specialty provided an overview of Humana and Kristina Johnson, Product Design/Development Lead shared trends and how they design products. Mark Wernicke, Vice President, Provider Development discussed healthcare partnerships and introduced care decision insights with tools and resources for physicians and members through meaningful analytics. Cheri Greenfield, Vice President, Clinical Care Services introduced home care operations focused on Medicare, and Mike Hartjes, Vice President, Actuarial and Analytic Services  shared changes in the insurance environment focused on the employer group.  The day wrapped up with an open discussion related to consumer satisfaction and transparency and the role of analytics in our organizations.

The day was hosted by LDP cohort member Rachel Cabelka, Manager, Clinic Operations, Aurora Health Care.  Mentee Kaosheng April Thao from Future Healthcare Executives at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee joined the group for the full day professional development experience.
