The videos “2019 ACHE Overview” and “ACHE: A Year in Review” are now available for viewing online. Both were shown during the 2019 Congress on Healthcare Leadership in March. “2019 ACHE Overview” describes the many ways ACHE has served members during the past year, and the “ACHE: A Year in Review” was shown during Congress luncheons.

The 2019 Chapter Member Needs Survey will be sent electronically May 6–24 to all ACHE Members who have been chapter members for more than one year. The survey was developed and will be administered by ACHE’s Department of Member Services, Research.

The 2019 survey focuses on members’ general satisfaction with education and networking events, and other chapter programs and services. The survey also asks respondents to rate their overall satisfaction with their chapters.

Where were you at in your career when you joined ACHE?

I was an MHA student at the University of Iowa when I first joined ACHE. Not only was I able to attend various ACHE events, but I was also able to attend ACHE Congress in Chicago both years. I saw first hand the opportunities that ACHE provided to me as a student and knew I wanted to continue to be a part of the organization as I proceeded into my career.

Where are you now in your career?

I am currently the Operations Administrator for Medical Oncology & Hematology and Research & Innovation at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, WI. Previous to that, I served as the Director of Ambulatory Operations for General Pediatrics & Urgent Care at UW Health.

How has ACHE been valuable to your career progression?

ACHE has been invaluable to my career progression in numerous aspects. Starting as a student, ACHE allowed me to gain exposure to various healthcare executives that provided key mentorship and professional development. As I progressed in my career, ACHE was a instrumental platform for the ability to network with and learn from healthcare executives across the state of Wisconsin. Most recently, the opportunity to participate in ACHE – WI Chapter’s 2018-2019 Leadership Development Program provided key insights, activities, and hands on learning into what it takes to be an effective leader in the ever-changing landscape of healthcare.

Who has been the most influential person in your career?

As my fellowship preceptor at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, John Dickey (FACHE) was highly influential in shaping who I am today as a healthcare leader. John not only pushed me to step outside my comfort zone but encouraged me to grow and develop as a well-rounded, servant leader.

What is something that you are working on recently that you are excited about?

In addition to my role as Operations Administrator for Medical Oncology and Hematology, I recently added responsibility as the Operations Administrator for Research and Innovation in Northwestern Wisconsin. This is a relatively new role that seeks to focus on supporting and growing translational work to improve our clinical practice. Additionally, we’re partnering with a local academic institution to expand the research knowledge base between clinicians, professors, students, and patients.

What is the best gift that you ever received?

The best gift I ever received was my first horse, Corky, at the age of nine years old who my parents surprised me with at Christmas. This started a lifelong love of horses!

Where people live influences their health. And more and more healthcare organizations and others in Milwaukee are targeting efforts and resources toward improving access to affordable and safe housing.  Panelists at a Wisconsin Health News panel will talk about efforts to address lead in the city, improve access to affordable housing and what else is needed. In April 2018 Concordia University Wisconsin broke ground on the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center’s 41,000 square-foot academic building to promote the future of where entrepreneurial collaboration and health care innovation can unite. This space will include a functioning medical clinic accompanied by incubator and collaboration space for business start-ups.

The three-story space will be opening in Fall 2019 and house the Batterman School of Business as well as the Next Generation Healthcare Leaders (NGHL) student group supported by the Wisconsin Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives. The business school has been atop the list of largest MBA program (within 100-mile radius of Milwaukee) for the past several years and is continuing with those efforts to support students and the community to ignite opportunity for collaboration.

In addition to Concordia’s engagement and participation in start-up and accelerator competitions focusing on solutions in health care, Concordia also hosts an annual Healthcare Economics Summit focusing on the business of health care with participation from key stakeholders and leaders from around the state, region and country. More recently the past keynotes includes former Governor Scott Walker and the President of the American Medical Association, Dr. Barbara McAneny.

The building will host a variety of mixed-used space including the cross-disciplinary “collaboratorium”, a medical clinic involving a collaboration of staff, faculty, and students from Concordia’s School of Health Profession’s and Batterman School of Business, and meeting space for the Rx Think Tank. Of the over 800 students in CUW’s MBA program, almost 100 of them are pursuing a degree in the health care administration track – a number that has significantly increased over the past few years.

If this wasn’t exciting enough the Batterman School of business has recently accepted its newly revised Healthcare Management major for traditional undergraduates. This comes at a time where the growth of traditional undergraduate students pursuing this major has continued to increase. With this revision comes the opportunity to revisit, revise and enhance the current associate and graduate level curriculum offerings to ensure what is being offered to students maintains a high level or relevancy and rigor to best prepare students for their career aspirations in healthcare.

Andrea Palm, Governor Ever’s pick to lead the Department of Health Services, is crisscrossing the state this spring in support of the health proposals in the governor’s first budget. Chief among those priorities is expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, a concept that has so far faced stiff opposition from top Republicans who control the Legislature.

A former health advisor for President Barack Obama, Palm will outline the department’s priorities and discuss how her D.C. experience is shaping her new role in the Badger State at a Wisconsin Health News event in Madison at the Madison Club (5 East Wilson Street) on Monday, April 15.  The program and lunch opens at 11:45, with discussion starting at 12:15pm).

ACHE recently awarded chapter innovation grants to nine chapters. The grant program fosters chapter innovation in the development and delivery of new programs, products and services or new methods of delivery that add value for ACHE members. In conjunction with ACHE’s 2019-2021 strategy, we asked chapters to focus on engaging our highest priority near-term audiences: early careerists and clinicians. Chapters could apply for two grant types: Chapter-Led (projects that are solely created and executed by the chapter) and ACHE-Chapter Collaborative (chapters will receive resources and guidance from ACHE to help them complete their projects).

The following chapters were award recipients:

Chapter-Led Innovation Grants

ACHE of Massachusetts

The grant will fund new podcasts that are specifically applicable to early careerists and clinicians, allowing a more convenient way to engage with the chapter.

American College of Healthcare Executives—Wisconsin Chapter

This grant will fund the development of a virtual Career Development Academy for early careerists. The academy will include quarterly webinars and an online community, while leveraging ACHE resources, such as ACHE CareerEDGE^®. 

Chicago Health Executives Forum

The chapter will target clinicians through establishment of MEDU, a physician skills enhancement program. The 10 core knowledge areas of the Board of Governors Exam will be the basis of the education offerings for the cohort learning experience.

East Tennessee Healthcare Executives Affiliation

This project will use a multi-pronged approach to increase and sustain membership among early careerists. The approaches include a mentor program; a social media, marketing and outreach campaign; and knowledge development in the areas of Baldrige and Lean/Six Sigma.

Greater Charlotte Healthcare Executives

The chapter seeks to engage both their early careerist and clinician members through a variety of tactics including webinars, quarterly emails and a one-day summit.

Washington State Healthcare Executive Forum

This is an event-based approach targeted to early careerists. Several networking events and a breakfast will serve as venues to serve a cohort of early careerists, who will also participate in emotional intelligence assessments through ACHE’s Career Resource Center and potentially in conjunction with the Seattle Cluster.

ACHE-Chapter Collaborative Grants

California Association of Healthcare Leaders

ACHE will work with the chapter to develop the appropriate technology to support a video resource library and enhance live streaming technology that can help engage early careerists and clinicians. The collaboration will focus on making sure the chapter understands the needs of early careerists and clinicians, and then meets those needs as they develop their video and event content. Acquisition of marketing and production expertise may also be necessary. Through the collaboration, there will also be a focus on adhering to all ACHE Face-to-Face and Qualified Education credits policies and procedures so any learnings can be appropriately applied to other chapters. 

ACHE of Northern Ohio

This grant targets clinicians through a program called Boardroom to Bedside. This empathy card-writing and distribution event strives to increase awareness of ACHE within the clinical professions with a goal of engaging them locally and nationally. The collaboration component will focus on messaging, branding and marketing to ensure that the empathy cards achieve that goal.

South Texas Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives

The chapter will develop an early careerist workshop focused on skill and resume development, leveraging of social media and an interviewing workshop series. This includes collaboration with ACHE’s Career Resource Center to engage the chapter on how best to support early careerists in these areas.
